The prize was established in the division last year by Arthur L. Kelly, who received his MBA from the University in 1964 and established the same faculty prize at Chicago Booth in 1999. In addition to his contributions to finance, business, international relations, and geography, Mr. Kelly served as a Trustee of the University from 1998-2008 and has served for nearly two decades on the Visiting Committee to this Division, including ten years as Chairman. It is fitting that we honor his contributions to the Division and the University through this award. The Kelly Prize celebrates faculty who, outside of their classroom teaching and research, have made exceptional efforts in promoting and supporting the division. The 2013 winners were Ka Yee Lee and John Frederick.
Anne Rogers, Associate Professor in Computer Science and Senior Fellow in the Computation Institute, has also served as an exceptional Director of Graduate Studies in the department for many years. Recently, she served in a leadership role to establish the Computational Analysis and Public Policy Master’s Program (joint with the Harris School). In addition, she engaged in significant work to implement BA/MS and BS/MS programs, allowing the best Computer Science undergraduates to obtain both a bachelor and master’s degree in four years. She also led the design and implementation of the Computer Science with Applications sequence, playing a transformational role in the undergraduate program. As a result, the department has seen increased interest in CS courses broadly, particularly the undergraduate courses.
Mike Hopkins is a Professor in Chemistry. Over the last decade, he has made numerous contributions to large-scale capital projects, including service as member of the PSD Steering Committee and Chair of the Chemistry Design Committee for the GCIS project; as Chair of both the Design and Programming Committees for the Searle Renovation project; and as Principal Investigator, Design Committee Chair and Director of the NIH/Searle Cleanroom/Nanofab project. In addition, he served with distinction as Chairman of the Department of Chemistry for six years.
The Kelly Prize will be awarded at the PSD Convocation ceremony on June 14.
