Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry plays a central role in our ability to address problems in medicine, energy, and technology. Research efforts at the University of Chicago span the fields of total synthesis, methodology, materials science, and chemical biology.

Dynamic interdisciplinary research allows us to address challenges using the tools of organic chemistry. Students and faculty immerse themselves in organic and organometallic synthesis, mechanistic studies of both synthetic and biological systems, protein engineering and evolution, the synthesis and properties of new polymers, bioactive molecule design, and more. In our stimulating and supportive atmosphere, research groups work on the fundamental principles of structure, bonding, and reactivity.
