Searle Hallway Redesign Creates a "Third Space" for Students

As the new school is set to begin, students will notice a change in the Searle Chemistry Laboratory Building. The main hallways of the Chemistry Department have a vibrant new look, blending the calming presence of nature with the clean lines of Mid-Century Modern style. This vibrant update was designed by Department Chair Jiwoong Park to create a more functional and welcoming space for students and faculty.

Of course, the new decor is not without scientific merit. A key part of the redesign draws on biophilia, the idea that people feel better and more productive when they're connected to nature. The ground and first floor of the building now feature robust live plants, including bright Neon Pothos and striking Chinese Evergreens, chosen for their ability to thrive in the department's lower light conditions. Research shows that even a small touch of nature can boost focus and reduce stress, offering students a much-needed mental break during long hours of studying and lab work.

Complementing the greenery is new furniture with a clean, timeless look inspired by Mid-Century Modern design. The chairs are a version of the classic Eames Armchair giving an ergonomic sophistication to the floor. This durable and stylish furniture is more than just comfortable; it's designed to create a "third space" outside of the classroom and lab.

We invite student to stop by and check out the new setup. We hope you'll linger longer, chat, and enjoy the space as we meet the new academic year and build a stronger community together.
