Guangbin Dong wins the 2024 Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award
Weldon G Brown Professor Guangbin Dong has been selected as the winner of the 2024 Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award.
The highly prestigious honor established by one of Japan’s leading chemical companies was established with the aim of contributing to the sustainable development of chemistry and the chemical industry by recognizing researchers who have made outstanding achievements in catalysis science.
“I feel quite honored and lucky to be on that list, and deeply grateful to the creative efforts of my current and former co-workers, as well as the generous support of my mentors and colleagues,” said Dong.
According to the organization, Professor Dong was selected for “innovations in green chemistry processes” that “have the potential to make a significant impact in fields such as pharmaceutical and natural product synthesis.”
“Dr. Guangbin Dong has established an original and creative research program in the development of new catalytic methods for the activation and subsequent functionalization of inert chemical bonds. In particular, his work on catalytic C–C bond activation, palladium (Pd)/norbornene cooperative catalysis, and atom-efficient carbonyl functionalization has had a significant impact on synthetic chemistry. These innovative research achievements have contributed to the development of green chemistry processes.”
Founded in 2004 and now in its 10thiteration, previous winners of the award include: Melanie S. Sanford (2022), Shannon S. Stahl (2016), F. Dean Toste (2014), David W. C. MacMillan (2011), John F. Hartwig (2009), Gregory C. Fu (2007), and Eric N. Jacobsen (2005).
The award ceremony, as well as commemorative lectures by the winner, will be held in autumn 2024.
