Weldon G. Brown Professor of Chemistry Guangbin Dong has been awarded the prestigious Mukaiyama Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of synthetic organic chemistry. The award, given annually by The Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan (SSOCJ), recognizes a young chemist under the age of 46 who has made significant advancements in the field.
Established in 2005 to honor Professor Teruaki Mukaiyama, a renowned figure in organic chemistry, the Mukaiyama Award includes a $3,000 prize, a medallion, and a certificate. Professor Dong will deliver an award lecture at the Seminar on Synthetic Organic Chemistry in Japan.
Professor Dong's research group at the University of Chicago focuses on developing innovative and practical chemical transformations. His team explores catalytic C-C bond activation to construct and modify complex molecules, and he is a leading expert in palladium/norbornene catalysis for site-selective arene functionalizations. Additionally, Professor Dong has pioneered new methods for activating and functionalizing C-H bonds in carbonyl compounds, and his work in boron chemistry has laid the groundwork for programmable organic synthesis.
This award highlights Professor Dong's impactful contributions to synthetic organic chemistry and his potential for continued groundbreaking research.
