APPLICATION INFORMATION |
| Apply
Online using our Secure Application Form |
| A
user profile is required to be created at the first instance and the
application process may thereafter be resumed at any time by logging in
again as the same user. The instructions for filling out the
application and directions for sending any supporting information, if
necessary, can be found online as you proceed through the application
process. |
 |
Create
or Continue an Online Application |
| This
involves creating your user profile and filling in information as
required. After creating a profile, the application may be left
incomplete and completed at a later time. The username and the password
indicated while creating the profile are required to be able to
continue working on an incomplete application. |
| |
| Completing
the Application |
| A
completed application will include undergraduate transcripts (one
official copy from each institution attended), three letters of
recommendation, and the results of the GRE examination (to include the
Subject Test in Chemistry). Foreign applicants must also submit the
results of the TOEFL or IELTS. |
| |
| Students
are normally admitted beginning with the autumn quarter of each year.
The sequential nature of some of our courses makes this the best time
to begin graduate studies. Although applications may be considered at
any time at the discretion of the admissions committee, students are strongly
encouraged to complete their applications by the December 31st deadline. The
department has no admissions quota and in recent years the entering
class has numbered between 22 and 39. |
| |
| Important
Reminders for Applicants |
| The
following statements supersede any contradictory
entries in any printed materials. |
| |
| Once
you have completed your online application, any supporting documents
should be sent directly to: Dr. Vera Dragisich, Chair,
Graduate Admissions Committee, Department of Chemistry, 5735 S. Ellis
Ave, Chicago, IL 60637. NOTE: There is no need for supporting documents
other than Transcripts and Letters of Recommendation (if not being
submitted online). |
| |
| Our
deadline for applications is December 31st, 2009.
This is a firm deadline. |
| |
| The
Application Fee ($55) must be submitted |
| |
| All
applicants must submit OFFICIAL (no copies) GRE scores to include the
Subject Test in Chemistry. GRE scores are only valid for three years. |
| |
| When
applying online you will be asked to list faculty of interest before
submitting your application. Visit our faculty profiles and read
about the research interests of our faculty. |
| |
| Applicants
are considered for admission beginning in Autumn Quarter only. The
sequential nature of many of our courses discourages beginning studies
at other times. |
| |
| Students
wishing to transfer to Chicago from another U.S. institution must
submit, in addition to letters and transcripts from their undergraduate
institution, a transcript and two letters of recommendation from
faculty at the graduate institution they are leaving. One of these two
letters should be from the research sponsor if the student has already
begun research. |
| |
| We
require an official copy of your TOEFL or IELTS scores if your native
language is not English or if you have not completed more than one year
of study in a U.S. college or university within the last five years.
TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years only. Applicants whose
total score on the four-part TOEFL falls below 90 (or IELTS falls below
7) will not normally be admitted unless other demonstrable evidence of
proficiency in English is available. Please see the Office of International Affairs website for complete details. |
| |
| Special
Reminder for Foreign Applicants |
| When
indicating GPA on your application, DO NOT CONVERT to U.S. scale of
4.0. For systems (i.e., China.) that give grades as a percentage, it is
the percentage that MUST be indicated under the GPA sections. Applications
will not be considered unless the percentage is reported. |
