| FINANCIAL
SUPPORT AND SCHOLARSHIPS |
| A well defined
Master of Science program of appropriate rigor is maintained, but the
Department of Chemistry does not offer financial support to students
whose degree goal is the master's degree. This degree is neither a
prerequisite for, nor a forerunner of, the Ph.D. degree, although it
may be acquired along the way if a student so desires. |

| Teaching
Fellowships |
| All applicants
for admission to graduate study in chemistry are considered for support
as Teaching Assistants. Our Assistants devote one afternoon per week to
laboratory supervision of a section of about fifteen students.
Associated duties may require from seven to ten additional hours.
During the 2009-2010 academic year, Assistants will receive a monthly
stipend of $2,147 plus a full-tuition merit scholarship. Contingent
upon satisfactory academic performance, both as an Assistant and as a
student, this support continues through the first three quarters of
study. Currently the total value of this 9-month award is $58,599. |
| |
| Research
Assistantships |
| Beginning with
the fourth quarter of study (usually the Summer Quarter), all students
in good academic standing are normally appointed as Research Assistants
by their thesis sponsors. Such appointments, contingent upon the
availability of funding, are expected to provide stipend support
(currently not to exceed $2,025 per month) and a full-tuition merit
scholarship throughout the remaining period of graduate study. If
first-year Summer support (tuition of $13,092 and a stipend of $6,075)
is added to the 9-month Teaching Assistantship, the total first
calendar year award amounts to $77,766. |

| Health
Insurance |
| Students who
elect the Basic
Plan Health Insurance offered through the University of
Chicago will have their salary increased to offset both the cost of
this coverage and the quarterly clinic fee charged by the University.
The additional value of this benefit is approximately $232 per month. |

| Special
Fellowships |
| A number of
supplemental fellowships are offered by the Department, such as the
Freud Scholar Fellowship. Also, the Division of Physical Sciences
offers a limited number of McCormick Fellowships which provide a
supplemental award for each of two years. All applicants are considered
for these awards, and the recipients are announced with offers of
admission. |

| Freud
Scholar Fellowship |
A very generous
alumna of this Department has endowed the Freud Scholarship Fund at The
University of Chicago, the purpose of which is to help us gather "the
best and the brightest" to study here for the Ph.D. in Chemistry. It is
anticipated that ten $10,000 awards will be made this year for entering
students in addition to full tuition and stipend support. Also, each
Freud Scholar will be invited to begin research at The University of
Chicago during the summer prior to their matriculation. They will
receive a summer stipend of $5,000 if they choose to take advantage of
this special opportunity.
We are excited by the possibilities afforded by the Freud Scholarship
Fund to assemble a group of dedicated outstanding young chemists who
will be afforded every opportunity to experience the rigors and joys of
research at the Ph.D. level. |

| Medical
Scientist Training Program (MSTP) |
| The Department
of Chemistry participates actively in the Medical Scientist Training
Program (MSTP) administered by the Pritzker School of Medicine at
the University of Chicago. MSTP is a structured six-year program
leading to both the M.D. degree and the Ph.D. in chemistry. Full
tuition and a stipend are awarded for the six-year period. MSTP is
funded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and is
open only to U.S. citizens. |
