Laboratory safety is of primary importance and requires an active committment from all members of the research community. Environmental Health and Safety provides policies and procedures to assist in maintaining a safe research environment through proper management of hazardous materials, safety equipment such as eye wash and showers, online management of chemical inventories, and a number of other resources. More information as well as a complete listing of policies and procedures is available through the Environmental Health and Safety website. |

Faculty, students, staff and visitors may conduct literature searches by utilizing an extensive collection of online indexing and abstracting databases and engines. These resources include Scifinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts), Beilstein/Gmelin (organic, inorganic and organometallic compound information), The ISI Web of Knowledge (Science Citation Index), Current Contents, Medline and PubMed. Graduate students, research associates and faculty have 24-hour access to the John Crerar Libraries (open 365 days per year), with amenable facilities for reading, conferences, and tutorials. These areas are available for both course and research related activities. A state-of-the-art computing facility (including a cybercafe, linux, mac, and windows machines, and a Digital Media Wall) was added in Spring 2000. Library services that are available to users include online interlibrary loan and electronic document delivery, reference and search assistance, online recall of materials, and checking your account and renewal of lending periods via the online library web catalog. |

The Department of Chemistry maintains an additional dedicated set of materials located in Jones 209 (one of the main chemistry buildings) for convenience. Several computer terminals with access to the web and online research information, a select run of journals and monographs, a photocopier, and a study area with tables and lounge furniture are all located in this area. Chemistry users have all-hours access. |

The student shop is a fully equipped machine shop available 24 hours a day to those who have completed a training course. The main equipment in the shop includes Bridgeport mills, Hardinge lathes, and a CAD workstation. In addition to teaching the training course, Helmut Krebs is available for consultation and advice. His extensive knowledge of machining makes projects progress quickly and successfully. |

This student shop is a fully equipped machine shop available 24 hours a day to those who have completed a training course at the RI shop. The choice of equipment in this student maintained shop compares with those available at the RI Student Shop. It is certainly a more convenient option for people located in the Chemistry buildings especially after work hours when access to the RI buildings may be limited. |

The Chemistry Department currently has two part-time glass blowers. The first is Brian Schwandt, who visits the department on Thursdays. He can do both on-site repairs on vacuum lines, etc. and off-site repairs on smaller items. The second service involves a representative from Reliance Glass. This representative arrives on Friday to pick up items in need of repair. These items are repaired at the company's full glass shop located in the suburbs of Chicago. |

For detailed information refer to the Chem-NMR web site above.

X-ray diffraction is one of the most powerful techniques for structural analysis of crystalline solids. Analysis of wide angle diffraction patterns provides information about internal atomic structure of nanoparticles and nanowires whereas the small-angle X-ray scattering is useful for investigation of nanoparticle assemblies, superlattices and thin films. All of these experiments can be carried out using the Bruker D8 Powder X-ray diffractometer equipped with sensitive area detector.
