The University of Chicago Library System houses extensive collections relevant to all chemical, physical, and biological disciplines. The John Crerar Library (adjacent to Cummings Life Science Center and the new Interdivisional Research Building) is the primary resource for researchers and encompasses the majority of science and medical holdings. Available collections include books, serials, microforms, CD-ROMs and other materials in all areas of science and technology. There is a particularly strong chemistry collection, as well as biology, medicine, polymer and materials sciences, geophysical sciences, physics, astronomy and the history and philosophy of science and technology materials. Eckhart Library houses the mathematics, computer science and statistics collections. Serial collections are extraordinarily exhaustive. Nearly all journal subscriptions are now available online for perusal and downloading as PDF reprints. Off-campus access is also available through a proxy service.

Faculty, students, staff and visitors may conduct literature searches by utilizing an extensive collection of online indexing and abstracting databases and engines. These resources include Scifinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts), Beilstein/Gmelin (organic, inorganic and organometallic compound information), The ISI Web of Knowledge (Science Citation Index), Current Contents, Medline and PubMed. Graduate students, research associates and faculty have 24-hour access to the John Crerar Libraries (open 365 days per year), with amenable facilities for reading, conferences, and tutorials. These areas are available for both course and research related activities. A state-of-the-art computing facility (including a cybercafe, linux, mac, and windows machines, and a Digital Media Wall) was added in Spring 2000. Library services that are available to users include online interlibrary loan and electronic document delivery, reference and search assistance, online recall of materials, and checking your account and renewal of lending periods via the online library web catalog.

The Department of Chemistry maintains an additional dedicated set of materials located in Jones 209 (one of the main chemistry buildings) for convenience. Several computer terminals with access to the web and online research information, a select run of journals and monographs, a photocopier, and a study area with tables and lounge furniture are all located in this area. Chemistry users have all-hours access.

ELECTRONICS SHOP
Technical Staff: Dave Smith & Gerry Jendraszkiewicz; Location: RI 101; Phone: 773-702-7220
The electronics lab repairs, designs and builds equipment. They possess both analog and digital instrumentation for signals ranging from DC to 1 GHz. The lab has designed and built such instrumentation as custom interlocks, power and timing stabilization devices for lasers, delay generators, high speed current amplifiers and frequency modulators.  They also have the capability to custom design printed circuit boards in-house. Whether you are seeking design information, aid in finding a company that manufactures your desired part, or just have general questions regarding electronics, the staff is both accessible and extremely helpful.

MACHINE SHOPS
Central Shop
Location: RI 62; Phone: 773-702-7247
The Central Shop provides machining services ranging from small repairs to major projects.  They have built many of the vacuum chambers in use in the chemistry department, as well as a wide variety of other projects. The "tool crib" in the central shop is a source of nuts and bolts, sheet metal and other items.

RI Student Shop
Technical Staff: Helmut Krebs; Location: RI ACC F-36; Phone: 773-702-7576
Web: http://jfi.uchicago.edu/~stash/
The student shop is a fully equipped machine shop available 24 hours a day to those who have completed a training course. The main equipment in the shop includes Bridgeport mills, Hardinge lathes, and a CAD workstation. In addition to teaching the training course, Helmut Krebs is available for consultation and advice. His extensive knowledge of machining makes projects progress quickly and successfully.

Chemistry Student Shop
Technical Staff: Helmut Krebs; Location: Kent Basement
This student shop is a fully equipped machine shop available 24 hours a day to those who have completed a training course at the RI shop. The choice of equipment in this student maintained shop compares with those available at the RI Student Shop. It is certainly a more convenient option for people located in the Chemistry buildings especially after work hours when access to the RI buildings may be limited.

GRAPHIC ARTS
Manager: Rudy Banovich; Location: RI 107, 109, 112/112A
Web: http://physical-sciences.uchicago.edu/graphic.html
The Graphic Arts Department provides many services to the department, the most common of which is copying materials for courses. They have also created many brochures and pamphlets, as well as providing soft binding for theses.

GLASSBLOWING
Department Contact: TBD
The Chemistry Department currently has two part-time glass blowers. The first is Brian Schwandt, who visits the department on Thursdays. He can do both on-site repairs on vacuum lines, etc. and off-site repairs on smaller items. The second service involves a representative from Reliance Glass. This representative arrives on Friday to pick up items in need of repair. These items are repaired at the company's full glass shop located in the suburbs of Chicago.

MRSEC FACILITIES
These facilities are shared by the members of the MRSEC and include computational facilities, a Gaertner ellipsometer, a Molecular Imaging AFM/STM, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an FTIR, a Raman spectrometer, an ESR spectrometer, and many more.
